I know all about the struggle that comes with depression and anxiety. On the outside I looked successful. But on the inside I was deeply unhappy. I’d been burnt out and highly stressed for far too long. I was running a multi-billion pound programme. My personal life was challenging me. And it took it's toll on my mental health and wellbeing.
My journey to becoming a therapist and a coach was born out of several months in 2014 when I could barely function.
It was like being at the bottom of a deep black hole with no way to climb out. I didn't have the will to breathe ... and had my body not taken over I would have stopped.
The anti-depressants the Dr prescribed just made me completely numb. Barely any feelings in my body, and an emotional emptiness that felt as vast as the Ocean.
So I threw them in the bin.
I got a positive psychology book and a hypnotherapy recording and started from there.
I learnt that the question wasn't "what is wrong with me?" … instead it was "what has happened to me, how can I heal it, and what needs to change?"
As my healing progressed and I went deeper I realised that I had experienced trauma as a child when my father first left us and my mother had had a breakdown, emotionally losing both parents on the same day.
I'd had PTSD after I'd been attacked when I was 17.
I'd developed complex PTSD during a violently abusive relationship that also left me with anxiety.
And by 2014, struggling to cope with the aftermath whilst in a high pressure job, I had developed depression.
But that's not the end of my mental health journey ... because I'm in love with life now. I'm happier than I ever thought I could be.
And that's not because my life is perfect now... it's because I've healed and I've learnt how to be happy IN my life, not by running away or creating a new life.
My life still isn't perfect and it never will be! But I'm happy. Truly. Obviously I still get tired and grumpy. I get sad and angry. But there's an underlying sense of peace and joy that I've never felt before. I have got my emotional freedom back. I’ve learnt how to cultivate strong mental health that is sustainable in the long-term.
I know what it's like to just want to be happy ... and I want you to know that it's possible for us all.
